Sally Van Nuys' Profile

About

Folk and Fiber offers mixed media art, original hooked rugs, and patterns and tutorials for rug hooking and punch needle embroidery.

I am Ohio fiber artist, Sally Van Nuys, and I love keeping the past alive in my life. As a teenager, I began collecting antiques and soon found a fondness for primitive antiques, fashioned by the hands of unknown makers to fulfill a need in their lives. Old paint and painted decoration captured my attention, and in the early 1980s I began painting in the style of folk artists of the past. I taught decorative painting, stenciling, and theorem painting throughout the 1980s in my Ohio art studio & shop.

As an antiques dealer, I had always admired antique hooked rugs. In the autumn of 2000, I began rug hooking in the primitive style using wool strips. I became so smitten with this fiber art, that my business and artistic efforts took a dramatic turn. Miniature needle punch design followed soon after and now, when the rug hook is not in my hand, I enjoy the quiet slip of the punch needle, creating miniature hooked rugs and other small, original needle punch designs.
Now, working from my home studio after leaving my profession as a writer, has been a blessing. To do what you love, where you love to be, with those you love the most is the best blessing one can hope for in life. I look forward to each new piece of an ever-changing life puzzle. Each new opportunity brings a bright ray of sunshine in the form of new challenges and friendships!

My work has appeared in The Wool Street Journal, a magazine for primitive rug hookers, Country Marketplace magazine, and I am a regular contributor of original rug hooking and needle punch projects published in Create & Decorate magazine.

Working with Landauer Publishing Corp., I have created designs and furnished models for two needle punch books - Coast to Coast in Punch Needle and Getting Started in Punch Needle. My work was also juried and selected for Early American Life magazine’s Directory of Traditional American Crafts, an honor of which I am extremely proud.

I am committed to excellence in craftsmanship and attention to detail, and I hope to help keep the past alive for others as well.
