About

Though my formal education is in ecology, I have always appreciated art and design all around me and love to create. FOUND started in 2008 when I took a break from research and teaching and began looking for a meaningful way to fill my days. The original idea for repurposing leather came from my dad who cut up a leather coat in an attempt to recreate a bag I acquired at a Central American street market. I loved and used the original bag beyond its life expectancy and, although the bag my dad made wasn't quite the same, the gift itself was much bigger than I realized at the time.

Etsy was an easy way to start selling my creations. I was thrilled to make a sale to a complete stranger and started thinking I might make a living doing something I love. Now, five years and two kids later, the artist's life gives me the flexibility to be present in multiple capacities. I recently added children’s books to my repertoire and hope FOUND continues to evolve as I move through life's stages.

Down to the zippers and hardware, almost all materials used in FOUND creations have been reused, recycled, or rediscovered. When I'm not sewing, my free time is spent searching for materials at thrift stores or digging through scrap bins. Often, the original material inspires the finished product. I don't really use patterns, so each finished product is one of a kind. So much stuff already exists in the world that is just begging to be reborn into new and wonderful life.
