HOW YOUR GARMENT IS MADE.......................

1st we DESIGN :
The quality of these garments is my biggest priority. I start by selecting the best fabric I can find, choosing only sustainable fabrics such as: Local Organic Cotton, Hemp, Organic Wool, and Raw Silk. I receive my fabrics in there natural state, with no added chemicals or dyes. The first step is to design a flat pattern of the garment in all sizes. I have created patterns that flatter the figure and fit most body types easily. 2nd we CUT:
Each garment is cut by hand based on your size choice and details such as sleeve choice.

3rd we SEW :
We serge and straight stitch all our garments together for super strong and durable seams. Lots of ♥ and attention to detail goes into this stage of your One of a Kind Gaia Garment !!!

4th we DYE:
All garments are dyed using wonderful, low-impact fiber reactive dyes or natural plant dyes. LOW IMPACT FIBER REACTIVE dyes are designed to bond directly to the fabric so less dye goes into the water system and they are free of any heavy metals.

THE GAIA STORY
When I was a teenager my father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Research has linked MS to a prepubescent exposure to an environmental toxin. This created a strong desire for me to understand environmental pollution and how solutions can be connected to our every day lives. I created Gaia Conceptions in 2003 with a focus on organic fabrics, earth friendly dyes, and simple designs. I was still in college so Gaia Conceptions remained small and festival based. I spent 2006 experimenting with natural dyes in India a studying environmental policy and sustainable design in The Netherlands. I returned with a renewed focus and a head full of Nomadic designs. Launching an ETSY shop in 2007 helped us reach the world and has catapulted us to where we are today.

SLOW CLOTHING - We have spent the last 6 years nurturing and refining the Gaia ethos as we grow. Our ultimate goal is to create comfortable, beautiful, and multifunctional clothing with sustainable materials and production at the core of every garment. Incorporating rainwater catchment systems, solar and wind energy, and green waste management systems into our production cycle is a natural next step.

NATURAL DYE BLOCKPRINT IN INDIA - We are currently collaborating with an amazing team dedicated to preserving the art of natural dye block printing in India. Applying our local-centric ethos to the fabric production creates a unique opportunity for us to uplift slow clothing communities on a global level while still maintaining the strength, pride, and sustainability inherent in local systems.

NC GROWN ORGANIC COTTON - Growing and harvesting the first North Carolina Organic Cotton crop was another amazing next step to localizing one of our materials. Bringing more green jobs to our home state and sourcing our organic materials within a 30 mile radius is a fundamental goal in making Gaia Conceptions as sustainable as possible.

IN DEPTH FABRIC DESCRIPTIONS.......

.......HEMP/CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON BLENDS.......
This fabric is a bit thicker and more textured when compared to the organic cotton and is grown and manufactured in China(fair trade). Takes dye really well for deep saturated color.

HEMP/ CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON KNIT RIBBING- This fabric is fantastic and is found in many of my garments. A light to med weight knit that has a touch of lycra to hold it's form.

MERINO WOOL KNIT - super warm and fuzzy with just a little stretch. Works wonderful for sweaters and wraps.
STRETCHY ORGANIC MERINO WOOL - A Merino wool knit with a little lycra for stretch with a smooth and vintage feel.
WOOL CREPE - A very light and airy merino wool knit with a wonderful drape and perfect for layering garments.

FABRICS YOU WON'T FIND AT GAIA CONCEPTIONS AND WHY:

BAMBOO/MODAL/TENCEL- all three of these fabrics use the same process to turn a wood pulp into fabric. This process uses a dangerous chemicals called carbon disulphide to transform the plant into liquid and then into fibers to be spun into fabric. These extreamly toxic chemicals can cause a plethora of health problems and neural disorders for the manufacturing workers. The new spin being put on the publics growing awareness of this chemical is that it operates on a closed loop syestem. While this sounds better, who wants a fabric saturated in a toxic chemical :( Bamboo is a fantastic renewable resource that is a wonderful choice for hardwood floors, cabinets, pencils, basically anything that doesn't need to much processing.

SOY FABRIC - 80% of the soy we eat and wear is genetically modified making it a boycott-able product in general. However, adding to this is the fact that it’s in just about everything we eat, especially processed foods, and the demand has grown so high that farmers are razing the Rainforest on a catastrophic scale in order to grow enough to meet our consumption needs. Soy fabrics are very unsustainable so we have decided not to use them.
