John Gibbons was born in 1983 in the small Northern California town of Redding. His father, a painter and an art teacher encouraged John to paint, draw and work with ceramics from a very young age. John’s father was also an antique bottle and European cut crystal collector. John was fascinated by the glass: “How was it made? Who invented glass?” John has wanted to blow glass for as long as he can remember; lucky for him Shasta Community College in Redding offered a glass blowing class and in the fall of 2003 John was introduced to the molten medium. Since his pursuit in glass began, John has traveled to Venice, Italy; Prague; Saint Luis, Mo; and the Eugene Glass School to soak up as much knowledge of glass as he could. He has studied with the famed glass sculptors, Martin Janecky from the Czech Republic and Pino Signoretto from Murano, Italy. John Gibbons was born in 1983 in the small Northern California town of Redding. His father, a painter and an art teacher encouraged John to paint, draw and work with ceramics from a very young age. John’s father was also an antique bottle and European cut crystal collector. John was fascinated by the glass: “How was it made? Who invented glass?” John has wanted to blow glass for as long as he can remember; lucky for him Shasta Community College in Redding offered a glass blowing class and in the fall of 2003 John was introduced to the molten medium. Since his pursuit in glass began, John has traveled to Venice, Italy; Prague; Saint Luis, Mo; and the Eugene Glass School to soak up as much knowledge of glass as he could. He received his B.F.A. in glass art from California State University, Chico in 2009 and immediately got a job at Harmony Glass Works in Harmony California on the central coast. John exercised his skills there for a year before relocating to San Diego, where he built his own glass studio. In 2015, he relocated to Eureka in Northern California to be closer to family. John feels blessed to be able to pursue his passion of glass art and thrives on the constant challenge and the endless possibilities that glass possesses.
