When I was in kindergarten I remember picking up a rock in Staten Island New York and being amazed at how much this hunk of minerals resembled a woman's face. I was stunned. Shocked. Flabbergasted. No piece of earth could possibly look like that by accident. I felt that it was important and that perhaps a nice lady's spirit was stuck inside. I went indoors, up to my room and put the rock in a box with other important things like the plastic heart from my friend Samantha next door, "pretty" shells from the Jersey Shore and some bubble gum.
In my early 20s I found that box while I was trying to make sense of my childhood closet. The lady rock was inside. I picked it up and almost remembered the face on the rock I once saw. The wild creativity I had as a child still exists in me but it has seen more things.
