Gitas Portal's Profile

About

I have always had a creative mind and the ability to create things with my hands. My interest in design and making was encouraged when my mum gave me my first wooden, hand peddled Singer machine at the age of 12 - a big step up from the usual needle and thread creations and repairs. I was so excited, and my afternoons shifted from running in the yard in Sierra Leone with my brothers and sisters to working on my prized machine. I would spend hours wheeling on it.

I can still remember to this day, my very first machine sewn garment. It was a pair of blue pyjama trousers for my younger brother. I laugh now, but is was a pair of ill-fitting trousers with one leg way to small for my brother to fit into it.

However, I continued to nurture my passion over the years and kept on practicing on my gift. After many experiments and compliments along the way, I then decided to start Gitas Portal - a brand for contemporary African clothing and accessories. The brand is actually named after my daughter, Gita (and is an acronym for: God Is Truly Amazing). This is in humble recognition of my gift, and my desire to bless others by sharing it.

So while I share my passion for feminine and beautiful clothes, I am also keen to inspire women to 'Be Bold, Win, Wear Colour - ( I want women to BE BOLD by standing out, WIN every time by being themselves, WEAR COLOUR by being unapologetic about their beauty and expressing their style with confidence. )

I love what I do and enjoy sharing my African and Barbadian heritage through my work.

I'm truly grateful to all who wear my designs with pride and the beautiful comments that echo what I aim to achieve with every design.
