I love wood. The infinite variety and variation of the grains and character is to me a source of fascination. I love the unusual, the hard to find, the wood with what is called figure, shimmer, chatoyance, or even eye candy. Tiger Maple, curly cherry, fiddleback walnut, cherry burl, spalted woods, wormy slabs or crotch cuts. Figured refers to the way light reflects off the variations in the twisting or curled grain that appear to make it shimmer and move. Some years ago I owned a small business called The Gnarly Woods Company. I specialized in saving huge trees from being buried, burned or ignored and left to rot. Tree’s with fence wire, or maples with a hundred holes from being tapped for sugar were always a valued find. They were cut into slabs for tabletops and conference tables. Tree’s with fence wire, or maples with a hundred holes from being tapped for sugar were always a valued find. They were cut into slabs for tabletops and conference tables. Wood is a gift of nature, and some of it is real treasure, with variations as intricate as polished agates. Loving wood as I do, I work it a great deal with my hands. I don’t like the noise of most equipment, and prefer to use rasps, files and to hand sand. My current specialties are small boxes made from some of the beautiful wood I already have, and new woods I am always looking for. When I return from vacations, my luggage often has a slab of some wood or another that I just couldn’t leave behind. My boxes are shaped like hearts, violins, guitars, horses heads, hands, feet and more. My martial art background has led me to make Shinto style gong stands that are quite striking, and interactive.

Regarding martial arts, I am a sixth degree Kukkiwon black belt in Taekwondo, and have studied several styles over the years. I am a published author, magazine feature writer, seminar presenter, International Hanmadang referee, former Triathlete and distance athlete. I am the original nature boy, and continue to hike long distance and regularly.
