I have nursed sick people for many years, mostly as a staff RN in a busy CCU. There, I learned how the skin affects and is affected by all other body systems. I have seen many people have skin problems and began having a few of my own. Stubborn (Dutch) by nature, I refused to be satisfied with what the commercially made soaps and lotions weren't doing for my chronic dry skin. I stumbled upon a book on soap making and read it cover to cover.
I learned about the fascinating chemical reaction between lye and fat that create soap and the natural glycerin which makes it emollient, moisturizing and so necessary for healthy skin. I was interested to learn that glycerin is extracted from commercially made soaps and sold for other uses. With the added synthetic scents and stabilizers (read their labels!)
