Glenda Blake's Profile

About

An in-house graphic designer, communications professional, and art/publications director for many years, in 2009 I returned to my studio-art roots and began painting again. It felt like remembering how to breathe.

When asked whether I work from life, from photos, or from my imagination, my answer is always, "yes." The reference photos I use are nearly all photos I've taken myself or was present for, and they are always tweaked or greatly changed from my imagination. I never copy a photo as-is. About

An in-house graphic designer, communications professional, and art/publications director for many years, in 2009 I returned to my studio-art roots and began painting again. It felt like remembering how to breathe.

My primary subject is the human figure in light and space. I also enjoy the occasional still life and landscape, along with owls and pussycats (a shared personal symbol for my husband and me).

When asked whether I work from life, from photos, or from my imagination, my answer is always, "yes." And I work or sketch from life whenever I get the chance.

I was awarded a 2012-13 Artists Grant by the Community Foundation for South Central New York for enlarging my dance work, both in number and in size. My grant-funded project is called "Unlikely Dance." (More info at http://glendablake.com/the-unlikely-dance-project/ )

For those morris dancers who stumble upon my shop: I danced for several years with Hearts of Oak Morris (mixed), Binghamton/Ithaca NY; was founder and fore of the short-lived Rose Mountain Morris (women), Montrose PA; and danced briefly with BF Harridans Morris (women), Binghamton NY.

I'm also a freelance designer, and actively seeking design work.
