I'm an history enthusiast who has been overzealous in collecting and so am in the processing of downsizing.
I find that history is best understood and interpreted by handling old items, and that research can be fun if you want it to be! While I completed an undergrad degree in history, I found that the tangible side of things often made it better to connect with the past as compared to texts alone - one of my favorite papers was for a social history course where I was looking at advertising in a 1950s magazine, and there was something to be said about flipping through the original aged pages that made it so much more alive than looking at a microfiche copy or textbook, for example.
