About

We are a collective of artisans and craftsmen working in Masaya, Nicaragua.

We offer beautiful products made directly by hand by talented craftsmen of this our land of great folk tradition, aboriginal and popular. We design and create a great variety of artesanal products like hammocks, rugs and wall hanging, leather and cotton bags, briefcase, etc.

There are some people involved in these workshops: Mrs. Maribel Hernandez, her daughter Miss. Kennia Hernandez, Mr Javier Sanchez, Mr Mario Guido and Mr. Roberto Alvarado.

Sometimes, mainly when the hammock workshop has many orders simultaneously, ten or fifteen or more for example, a few temporary workers are hired, but most of the time we all four are in charged of design, preparing, and confection of the items.

Nicaraguan hammocks, unlike Mexican or Mayan hammocks, have three or four parts: the net or body of the hammocks, the arms, the fringes and also the wooden sticks.

Most of the times Javier and Kennia design the net of the hammock, this body is made hand embroidery using "bastidores", they are special frames to hold on the threads, and with knitting needles create the net woven. Many threads are combined and with the colors. Maribel and Roberto also design the fringes, some of them use a crochet design, they also look for new design and styles, color combination, etc.

All of us joined the parts as well as propose new colors combination and designs. the net join with the arms through a few loops at the ends, and tie knots. Some times, and it depends on the size and strong of the hammock, we have to add an especial lacquer sealer to this knots. We usually also prove the weight that the knots can hold with some manila ropes. Fringes usually join with the net using knitting needles.

Mr Javier is also the main designer and creator of beautiful leather bags, briefcase, book liners, leather covers for books, bibles and many things more.

For making the leather items the first part is to design the item drawing it usually, thinking of the color, texture and kind of the leather. Or taking an existing design, for example a cotton bag. Javier and Roberto take part in the designing part and the preparation of the leather. It is necessary measuring and cutting in a cardboard mold all the different parts that is going to form the bag for example.

Then it is necessary to make the same things with the leather using the mold. On the cutted leather edge it is also necessary to apply a process of devastated to refine the edges of the pieces. Then the process continues joining all the parts with a special sewing machine and reinforce the seams with interior cloths and adding the accessories like handles and shoulder straps, buttons, buckles, belts, zippers

Only the tapestries are made by the close relatives of Mrs Maribel, her mother and father, that actually live near to the workshop. They also used to make hammocks, they are good hammock and crochet artisans.

We offer to our clients the possibility to custom any of our products. they can add tags, logos, change the form and size, etc. Because they are made in our workshops.

Thank you very much
