Handmade Pretties' Profile

About

Handmade Pretties was started by me, Lara Newsom, in 2002 while I was attending grad school at Cal Arts. As you can imagine, my private school tuition left me a little strapped for cash, so when friends asked to buy the little felt flowers I was making for my nieces for Christmas, how could I say no. Eventually, I started selling to a few boutiques in Los Angeles, and began vending at Felt Club. In March of 2006, I opened my etsy shop. The morning after I uploaded my first items, one of my brooches was featured on the front page. I made my first sale soon after that. I was completely hooked.

My product line diversified after the birth of my first child (Sylvia) in 2004 to include children's clothing and toys.

As you can imagine, my private school tuition left me a little strapped for cash, so when friends asked to buy the little felt flowers I was making for my nieces for Christmas, how could I say no. My product line diversified after the birth of my first child (Sylvia) in 2004 to include children's clothing and toys.

Following the birth of Beatrice in 2007, my family relocated from Los Angeles to Urbandale, Iowa where I make creations in my "spare" time while taking care of my two darling daughters. It is not unusual for me to stay up until 2:30 in the morning just to finish a new batch of something pretty.

My undying devotion to recycling and deconstruction lead me down my current path of creation. My background in painting and sculpture have left me with a strong sense of color and form. Not only do I sew every product for sale on my site, but I have created the patterns and hand selected all of the textures and colors.

I have been honored greatly by having the opportunity to work with several of the editors at Meredith. My products have appeared in the pages of such great magazines as Better Homes and Gardens and DIY Magazine. I have also done several commissioned set pieces for these magazines.

When purchasing from Handmade Pretties, you should know that I ALWAYS choose local or handmade first when making purchases, so you can rest assured that your commitment to quality handmade goods will continue in our household.

Love,
Lara Newsom
