Catherine Witherell's Profile

About

I'm a mixed media jewelry artist and I've been working with silver in the form of PMC (precious metal clay) since 2000. I also mix in sterling silver, argentium silver, sometimes a little brass, gold filled wire, commercial and handmade chain and details in 14K, 18K, and 22K gold. I like to use all kinds of things in my artwork and I stand behind the quality and beauty in each piece I sell.

Metal clay is a relatively new substance that is made up of finely ground particles of pure silver and after being formed into something interesting, it's fired in a kiln and sinters into a solid silver object. Before I ever heard of this stuff, I was a potter and sculptor so when I did hear about it, I got very excited and spent years experimenting before I ever decided to sell my work.

I've written two magazine articles about my designs with precious metal clay for early issues of Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine and my work has been included in three of the five PMC Annual books (2007),(2008) and (2011), as well as "A Charming Exchange: 25 Jewelry Projects To Create & Share" by Kelly Snelling and Ruth Rae (2008), "Metal Clay Beads: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration" (Lark Jewelry Book) by Barbara Becker Simon (2009), and "The Art of Metal Clay, Revised and Expanded Edition (with DVD): Techniques for Creating Jewelry and Decorative Objects" by Sherri Haab (2010).

Other metals that have been adapted to this process are bronze, copper and steel.

I'm a founding member of the Etsy MetalClay team since it began in August, 2008. We're a global group of artists that use metal clay in our jewelry and objects. If you'd like to see some of my process, you can visit my blog at www.happydayart.typepad.com and many photos of my work at my flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/happydayart/

My customers have said wonderful things about my work after they've received it and they always say that what they purchased looks even better in person than it does in a photograph.

Please feel welcome to ask me any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Cheers and Happy Day!
