About

Hi,
My name is Jean and I am the artist, designer, creator of Hippie House Designs. I started this business to share my hippie apparel artwork with the world.
I’ve been sewing for about 30 years. It all started when I was little and I would design and sew together clothes for my Barbies. We couldn’t afford the expensive ready-made Barbie clothing at the store, so I would find pieces of scrap fabric and create my own. My Barbies had quite unique outfits sometimes but I think they were ‘well-dressed’. In my early teen years, my Mom introduced me to the sewing machine – a lot faster than a needle and thread. I found myself altering clothes I had, making new ones, and even was paid to sew for others (good money for someone who was too young to work). Well, as time went on, I married a wonderful man and we had three beautiful daughters together. So, I got a lot more…

About

Hi,
My name is Jean and I am the artist, designer, creator of Hippie House Designs.
So, I got a lot more sewing experience over a span of years. It gave my daughters ‘original designs’ to wear as well - so they were never duplicated wherever they went like it is with store-bought clothing. Also, handmade clothing is much better made. Now I have a sweet little grand-daughter and the cycle continues (she likes to hang out with me when I sew and even ‘designs her own clothes’ – she is 2 ½).
Since I grew up during the ‘original hippie era’, I can appreciate the different artisans today who are replicating the hippie style and keeping it alive. The hippie clothing style reflects creativity and individualism of the wearer - and it is ‘really’ comfortable.
I mainly sew my hippie clothes with cotton fabric, or a cotton blend. Making the patchwork skirts is what I really enjoy most. It’s fun to pick out the different colors with their own personalities and then put them together to form a magnificent pallet – a ‘perfect symphony’ of color. I use new and vintage fabrics as well as recycled. I feel like recycling is an important practice. Our Earth only has so many resources before it is used up and I keep that in mind when sewing as well. Scraps of fabric are always saved, to be used in other creations.
My hippie items are original art. Like a painting, the painter sees a concept and his art tells a story. My hippie items are created and named in my head before they are put together. Each hippie item makes a different statement and is named accordingly. I believe your clothes reflect your personality and your feelings. My hippie clothing and apparel is designed to appeal to a variety of personalities and emotions.
Upcycling Clothing is also very interesting - taking two or more items and merging them together to create something new and different. I plan on creating more Upcycled/Recycled Clothing, so check back.
Designing and sewing ideas are endless, so I sew every spare minute I have (needless to say my inventory is growing rapidly). In an attempt to get my items to the public, I sell on EBay with username hippiehousedesigns and I have a website at Hippie House Designs.com. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions you might have.
Thank you for looking at my items. I hope you can find something that will fit your special personality and style.
Have a great day!
