My grandparents were in vaudeville on my mom's side, who started as a dancer with them when she was 6. He was a Greek immigrant john Pappamarkou, who played santouri & taught my grandma Bertha a dancer of Scottish descent from Wisconsin, to sing in Greek & Turkish. They made 78's.
John came from a very old tradition of Greek Orthodox preists. He came to Boston to go to theology school but broke the tradition by dropping out & becoming a musician & gambler.
They both died young & put their other 4 kids into an orphanage in wheeling, west va. It later had a fire destroying all the records so I was only able to find one of the siblings, not the other 3.
They kept my mom bc her dance skills brought them an income.
She later became known as Melanie Marko, the Golden Greek; the leopard girl; the cat girl; & had an act called "the serpent & the slave girl." She made her own costumes & worked…

She taught ballet, modern, tap, ballroom dancing.
in those days live musicians were used, and she danced to " miserlou." "Caravan," & "Harlem nocturne " among others.
Dad was a cellist & bassist who worked with Kenny Burrell & Detroit Symphony.
Also immigration officer on Canadian border who spoke French & Italian; & a science teacher for Einstein jr high; & taught 5th grade.
I had a radio show for 12 years in the 70s and 80s at UCSB by invitation. it was called music of many lands. at the same time I had a talk show on The same station kcSb-fm called new age forum. Did a documentary on UFOs in the 70s used on three radio stations. I worked as a journalist in three music stores, as a dancer, waitress, and to Montessori schools as a teachers aide & 2 public schools, mostly in art and music and reading.
