My grandparents were in vaudeville on my mom's side, who started as a dancer with them when she was 6. He was a Greek immigrant john Pappamarkou, who played santouri & taught my grandma Bertha a dancer of Scottish descent from Wisconsin, to sing in Greek & Turkish. They made 78's.
John came from a very old tradition of Greek Orthodox preists. He came to Boston to go to theology school but broke the tradition by dropping out & becoming a musician & gambler.
They both died young & put their other 4 kids into an orphanage in wheeling, west va. It later had a fire destroying all the records so I was only able to find one of the siblings, not the other 3.
They kept my mom bc her dance skills brought them an income.
She later became known as Melanie Marko, the Golden Greek; the leopard girl; the cat girl; & had an act called "the serpent & the slave girl." She made her own costumes & worked…
