Lesley Aine Mckeown's Profile

About

"It is of utmost importance that all my work is created with respect for natural aesthetics
and the environment. I look to use recycled metals and fair trade stones. Each piece is
created in my studio in the tradition of the American Studio Art Jewelry movement of the1950 and 60's which dictates the work is solely created in the artists studio. The result: a unique collection of jewelry for the people for who strive to be distinctive and authentic.
Nature provides the raw materials that inspires me. A lure that engages the creative
process... the need to make drives the piece. Each speaks a unique language and it is
this exchange I strive to share with the viewer. To spark inspiration, wonder and joy. Art
that moves the soul and transcends time...."

Born Kansas City, Lesley was exposed to art and design at an early age. Both her parents, grdauates of the Kansas City Art Institute provided a nurturing environment that enabled her to recognize my intuitive abilities and eventually express those creative proclivities. It was after a short stint as an apprentice with a silversmith that she became smitten with the medium and the sculptural possibilities of metal. Primarily self- taught her approach is straightforward, exploring forms and using only essential details in search of a simplicity that balances the idiosyncrasies of nature with the clean rhythms of Modernism. Current focus includes translating jewelry designs into sculpture and exploring oil painting.
Loves - Horses, dogs, cats, turtles, birds and small snakes. Sound of the wind in the trees, the ocean on a rocky coast. Interior design , but not cleaning! Anything Japanese. The endless expanse of desert, smell of the creosote bushes after a rain. Mythology, astronomy, botany, geology, ornithology and archeology. Kadinsky and Maynard Dixon. Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Whinney the Pooh.
Passions -Energy conservation, responsible government, cooking, gardening laughing, living life to the fullest.
Hopes- To make a difference and create something really wonderful.
