About

Hello. I´m Kerry and my partner is Alvaro.
We make up independent5050 - he´s the one 50 and I´m the other. I graduated in fashion design and Alvaro studied photography in London. This is where we met and have been together ever since.

We combine different fabrics from around the world, some are from warehouses with vintage stock, some luxury interior design fabrics which dear friends Barbara and Casmira clear out of their design studio. Others are precious pieces which have been guarded for years.

About

We started making clothing in 1995 in South Africa and have been working for ourselves ever since. Initially our sales were nationwide in funky shops namely Big Blue and Idols. We have also sold our bags in Ireland and Camden Market in London.

Now we sell at markets in Lisbon and its great to meet our customers and see the amazing variety of people who buy our bags. Our bags travel all over the world and speak to people as diverse as a porcelain restorer at Meissen in Germany to a tattoo artist in California. We love this cross cultural integration.

In our spare time, we go mushroom picking in the forest and work on our land. We are creating an environment where people can come to chill out and enjoy all the simple pleasures of homegrown and handmade products.

We need a purpose in our lives, something we can give to the world that shows we were here, that we made a difference.

Our fabrics are truly rare as they come from first sample pieces. Some of them never go into production, making them totally unique. We are delighted and feel so privileged to receive these gems when our dear friend Barbara clears out her studio to make way for the new collection.
We make two fabric buying trips a year, then off to work in our reclaimed barn studio in the country. Some bags are born from what feels like divine inspiration, inside pocket details come from many discussions, samples and testing until it´s just right.

Most of our bags are one of a kind and they are put out into the universe until the person who it was made for appears. When a bag really speaks to you, it´s because it was made just for you.
Grab the opportunity!

We hope that you will love wearing your bag as much as we love creating them.
Wishing you everything of the best.

Thank you for getting to know us.
