My interest in textiles goes back to when I was a child and would watch my mother mend fishing nets; observing how she repeatedly wrapped and knotted the twine around the rope fascinated me. When I attended college at UW-Superior, my interest in textiles peaked again and I took up Fiber Arts and loom-weaving. It was the first time I was able to explore fabric as a way of expressing myself artistically. At first my designs were simple but I quickly began to explore color and design.
While loom-weaving was a wonderful way to produce beautiful work, I found it somewhat restrictive. I struggled to find ways of conveying my ideas but was disappointed with the results. I was then introduced to a guest speaker at UW-Superior who was a quilting artist. She was able to achieve the smooth lines and color I was trying to attain.
