My Mum started my Whimsie collection, I don't remember getting my first one, but I would have been about five. I faithfully catalogued them by species or habitat, and gave them names. We trawled car boot sales and jumble sales. I'd run up to her and ask for 10p or 20p to buy a whimsie. I remember one day when I got a pound to spend and got 5 nursery rhyme figures. These were my favourite, I wrote out each rhyme and sat the figures on the paper. One day I put some in with the hamster to keep it company.
As I grew up my whimsie collection was put to the back of my wardrobe in a box, I had finished with them as I was all grown up, but my Mum continued to give them to me. "here's one you haven't got" she'd say. I would never tell her I had three just like it and away it would go into the little box.
