I have been crafting for as long as I can remember. Raised in the hills of Mendocino County, California, I was fully homeschooled and encouraged to follow my own interests from the beginning. As a young child, I was deeply immersed in and inspired by the diverse beauty of the natural world and began creating small crafts reflecting that, and by age 11, musical instruments from clay, wood and other materials. Growing up in the backwoods, I spent a lot of time studying trees, what their wood looked like, and various woodworking techniques. I wanted tools so badly that I started a lawn care "business" when I was twelve. I would strap my weed-eater on my bike and ride to neighbors properties, some of which were miles away to look for work. Nearly every penny I earned went into buying hand tools and later on a wood lathe and other power tools. In early 1995, at age 15, I began an extensive apprenticeship with a master shakuhachi flute maker, Monty Levenson, that led me to a path which, among others, I still follow to this day. As a sixteen year old, I built my own 16' x 24' pole-frame workshop from trees around me that I harvested with a hand saw. I was intent on having my own creative working space! For a sixteen year old with no other building experience it was a pretty good building, and to the best of my knowledge it is still standing currently. In 2006, I opened my own shakuhachi flute and wood shop business, though I still worked closely with my flute teacher for a good number of years. Since then I have been steadily refining my skills and continually exploring new crafts, such as wooden earrings and barrettes. To sum it up, I find crafting to be a calling, a great passion of mine. I now happily live in and work from my home near Celo, NC with my wife Meredith and two sons, Oak and Eben.
