Our Team: (Everything is handmade, by me, but I have help with administrative tasks) http://distinctionjewelry.com/info/about/our-team/

I'm a perfectionist who takes great care in the selection of materials and quality of workmanship. My metalwork (soldered and/or smelted) pieces are given a professional high polish. I take pride in my work and hope to make something you will love for years. When you buy from me, you are supporting a rural American artist, not a retail giant or a third-world factory.

I don't work quickly, but I do work carefully. My custom work takes a while, as does my shipping, but you can be assured that you will get a beautifully made and packaged final result as a reward for your patience.

REAL, GENUINE GEMS

I chose my gems with knowledge and care. The world of colored stones is a complex one, and it's one I feel at home navigating for you to find the best quality and values from my large network of carefully chosen, trusted suppliers. I do not use synthetics, manmade gems, lab grown gems, or CZ in my work unless you specifically request them, and I work to fully disclose any gem treatments. Stones in my jewelry are all real, selected knowledgeably from trusted vendors and represented honestly in my product descriptions.

STUD EARRINGS IN STERLING SILVER, 14K GOLD, AND PALLADIUM

What metal should you choose for stud earrings?

Sterling Silver: Affordable, bright white color, safe for people with nickle allergies. Will tarnish (but can be cleaned) over time and is somewhat softer than gold or palladium.

14K Yellow Gold: Highly hypo-allergenic, strong, resists tarnishing. A timeless classic.

Palladium: A platinum group white metal, highly hypo-allergenic and the best white metal choice for those with copper allergies, also nickle-free. Strong, not quite as white as sterling silver. Similar in cost to white gold but more pure and in my opinion a better product.

14k White Gold: Gold which has been mixed with other metals to lighten it. Most white golds contain nickle and have a dull appearance, making it necessary to plate with rhodium. May cause allergic reactions when the plating wears off. Appearance will degrade over time, requiring re-plating. I'm not a fan.

DISTINCTION JEWELRY AND THE WORLD WE LIVE IN

I buy all of my precious metals (silver and gold) from US-based wholesalers who buy their stock from US refineries who work only with recycled metals. This means that no new metals were mined to produce my jewelry; all of my metal is recycled. All commercially made charms, clasps, and components used in my work are either made in the US or fair trade certified.

I order or purchase my gems primarily from:

- Fair trade sources.
- Stones that were mined and cut in countries that protect the human rights of their workers (like the US, UK, Germany, etc.).
- Stones sourced from dealers who buy directly in the source countries and examine the mines, cutting shops, and other workplaces carefully to ensure the respect of human rights and fair, safe working conditions.
- Stones rockhounded and cut by individual lapidary artists who create their finished stones as a hobby, business, and labor of love just as I do my jewelry.

This causes an increase in prices but I believe the knowledge that nobody risked their life or health to produce the stone is worth it. I get emails every day from vendors in underdeveloped countries boasting of the great deals on gemstones they can give me because they have the lowest possible labor costs - and I delete every one of them.
