About

I just read Etsy’s section on how to write a great profile, so I thought I’d update mine. I’m a first-year medical student, and in my so-called “spare time” (i.e., when I’m procrastinating, or just plain sick and tired of looking at incomprehensibly dense medical textbooks) I make beaded/gemstone jewelry. I also volunteer once a week at a local no-kill animal shelter (www.darcysarc.com), and I am owned by two birds (Charlie, a budgie; and Oliver, a lineolated parakeet). There’s also a family dog (Wilson), who is a rescue from Winnipeg Animal Services. Once I have the freedom of owning my own home, I plan on adding to my flock of birds (more linnies and a quaker parrot are next on my list), and rescuing a couple of dogs of my own. Not to mention having a bigger workspace for my crafting...it's tough to stay organized when my gemstones and findings are crammed onto the same shelf as my stethoscope, reflex hammer, and blood pressure…

Not to mention having a bigger workspace for my crafting...it's tough to stay organized when my gemstones and findings are crammed onto the same shelf as my stethoscope, reflex hammer, and blood pressure cuff!

With regards to my jewelry, I have always been drawn to semi-precious stones. I started by buying gemstone jewelry off eBay, and then a few years later I discovered Etsy. Then my control-freak tendencies took over (not to mention my growing need for a hobby of my own), and I started buying beads and other supplies to make my own pieces. And THEN I started thinking about how nice it would be if my hobby paid for itself, so...here I am! As to why I like working with gemstones rather than, say, glass or resin beads...well, the beauty of gemstones is pretty much self-evident and self-explanatory. All I have to do is put them on a string, or dangle them from some earwires, and you have an instant piece of organic, wearable art!

I also find it very relaxing to sit at my desk and create something that might, someday, bring pleasure to someone else. It's also excellent bonding time with my partner in crime (Oliver, the handsome fellow in my avatar), since he loves sitting on a nearby shelf and shuffling his own special pile of beads around as I work.

Since I'm new to Etsy, I'm hoping everyone will be patient with me and let me know when I'm doing things wrong (and also, when I'm doing something well!). Thank you so much for stopping by my little corner of the internet; I hope you enjoy browsing through my shop and if you have any questions about anything at all, please feel free to drop me a line!

I am also on Etsy under the username calamityjane616.
