ARTIST STATEMENT

Art is a way to work out and communicate ideas, thoughts, and questions. My work is a reflection of my experiences, ideas, and point of view of our society and world. Dreams and subconscious thought are a large part of my work. I work in metalsmithing, drawing, painting, and sculpture with each offering different means of expression and depth. The inspiration of art comes from dreams, life’s daily triumphs and struggles, and our world. How we interact with the world depends on our emotional connection and frame of mind.

A beautiful sunrise can inspire as the light plays off the clouds and a bad day can evoke a darker tone. I sketch almost daily and carry a sketch book to jot ideas and inspirations as I get them. Each art discipline has its unique attributes. Metalsmithing (jewelry) is small, intimate and heavy in design. I work as engineer during the day and have an industrial tone to my work. Drawing is an outlet for ideas and concepts and is more complex in meaning a symbolism. Painting adds another level of complexity and creativity. Sculpture bridges the gap from metalsmithing to larger scale three dimensional interpolations and ideas. Each discipline has its own unique qualities that I use to best convey my thoughts and ideas. My daily life as a mechanical engineer has an industrial influence on my art.
