About

Welcome. My name is Jiri and I am crazy about wood. I have been crafting handmade furniture since I was knee-high. My dad was a skilled woodcarver and my grandfather worked on occasional projects restoring wooden parts on churches. It was genetically determined that their passion would rub off on me. My father taught me much when I was growing up in the Czech Republic. The first esthetic piece I ever made was a rocking chair.

Emigrating to the US was a challenge for me but I was able to focus on my hobbies of music, poetry and also my wood crafts which helped me through. I now work in Wilmington, North Carolina as an antique restorer mainly but also work on my own projects.

I love to challenge myself so working with exotic woods really inspires me. Birds Eye Maple is a very hard wood but it is smooth with a beautiful pattern. Only 1 in 500 maple trees have this pattern. The exact cause for it is still a mystery. If it was not, then people would be farming these trees to emulate this pattern for it is so beautiful and sought after. I love that mystery of nature.

Birds Eye Maple is a great food safe material, treasured by cabinetmakers but it is difficult to work with. It is resistant to scratches, very dense and listed among the exotic
species. It is a very expensive wood due to it being rare.

I have lots of other design ideas in the pipeline and I will soon bring you spoons, lamps, turned vessels, tables etc. Please do check back from time to time to see my new creations or send me a message with any ideas you have. I would be delighted to make your ideas a realization.
