John Novis' Profile

About

I don't intend to write this biography in the third person. It's being written by me about myself, so I am writing about myself in the first person. In my married life, I am very much the second person, so it's good to be first for once, if only briefly.

My full name is Stephen John Novis, but I have been known as John since birth. This was to avoid confusion with my father and grandfather, who were also Stephen John Novis and were called Young Steve and Old Steve respectively. As a toddler, I was unlikely to be confused with my father, but, being known by my middle name has caused confusion to other people all my adult life. My wife and I side-stepped this problem with our own son by naming him Daniel.

I was born in 1949 in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England and I still live there (or here, depending on where you're reading this). Bedford is not somewhere that tourists flock to - it's more the sort of place that the inhabitants move away from - but it's home and we like it.

I create all my artwork on my computer, so there are no "originals", except on my hard drive. My computer is about 8 years old now (which I think is about 120 in human years), so when it dies, the originals die with it. If it dies before me, I'll buy another one. I hope I don't die first, because there won't be anybody to look after it. I started doing this to while away the lonely hours when my wife is watching soap operas and reality shows, but it now consumes most of my waking hours, and several of the sleeping ones as well.

Although prints of my work now hang on walls all over the world, I still do it for fun. The day I stop enjoying it will be the day I stop doing it. Each piece means something to me, but it may mean something different to you. For me, the essence of art is not in the artist or in the medium. It's in the mind of the observer. For this reason, I avoid giving emotive or overly-meaningful titles to my work, as I don't want to attempt to lead viewers' impressions. I'm sure you wouldn't let me, anyway.

I hope you enjoy my work. Please sit back and take a look around.
