I’m a bird artist and illustrator. My work has appeared in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s “Birds in Art” and “Naturally Drawn” exhibitions and my illustrations of birds and birdwatchers have appeared in Bird Watcher’s Digest for many years.

I work primarily in watercolor and gouache, media that are well-suited for conveying the lightness of birds as well as the fleeting nature of bird sightings. I strive for realism, but one that allows for some loose, impressionistic brushwork.

I have used a film camera as an important tool for studying birds. (I graduated from The Ohio State University with a major in film-making). The fundamental problem facing every bird artist is that birds don’t stand still for long, and the motion picture camera has helped me solve it.

“Art,” one of my college professors once said, “gives lasting expression to what we love.” That statement neatly sums up my motivation – to give lasting form to what are some of the most beautiful expressions of life on earth. They shouldn’t be missed.
