About

Art has always been a part of my life:

I grew up drawing and painting when I was a child, then headed off to the Alberta College of Art and Design as a teen. In 2001, I graduated with a degree in Visual Communications with a focus on Illustration. Over the next few years I worked at various national and international corporations and created over 100 pieces of commercial/editorial illustrations. I also temporarily relocated to London, England for a change of pace and a promising job as a graphic designer with HSBC Investments (UK).

After a car accident in 2008 that left me with serious neck and back injuries I started to paint again as part of my rehabilitation. I would strap on a neck brace to be able to paint. As a result I started painting regularly again and I opened this Etsy Shop…

How my whimsical series for children began:

My friend Carrie just had a baby girl, Nya and I was thrilled to receive the invitation to her baby shower. Carrie is kind, caring and a complete sweetheart and I wanted to give her something unique and different to celebration the birth of her gorgeous baby girl. I wanted her to know how excited I was for them, and have my gift represent my deep feelings of friendship and love. I didn’t want to get them some generic onesie that the baby would quickly grow out of. I also didn’t want to just chip in some cash to go towards a bigger gift like a stroller with some mutual friends. After the baby shower I wanted my gift to be memorable and special. I wanted to ensure that my gift choice would not be duplicated, have that elusive wow factor and I wanted something that was high quality and would last for years and years to come… As a result my very first whimsical giraffe painting was born.

Where I get some of my inspiration:

My artwork and colour palette is heavily inspired by Tiffany stained glass lamps from the 1900s. I'm also a huge fan of the Art Nouveau movement which is evident in my Translucent tree and flower paintings.

My unique process:

One thing that is truly unique about my artwork is that the black outlines are raised. The black paint is generously poured onto the surface; which can take more than 24 hours to dry. Giving a special 3D effect to all of my original artwork; the images can appear as though they are leaping from the frame.
