Mini escapes!
You know, the place you want to go instead of where you are. Nostalgic landscapes, spirit animals, inside jokes: this is the good stuff that reminds you why you are you, and nobody else. This summer my beau and I moved onto a 29' sailboat, so we are in the midst of our escape while I make these tiny baubles.

A lovely friend made a mini-movie about my process which you can see on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/109888849

A few years ago, when I was working with a crew of wonderful folks to recreate the gold-leaf art deco designs on the Empire State Building, boy, I thought I had really made it. Painting murals in New York City! But big and fancy doesn't mean happy. My ego had climbed the ladder, but I was exhausted, full of obscure toxins and in tears when I couldn't get a brushstroke right…

There have always been paints and brushes and canvases in my life. Miniatures were an experimental accident. I think it is combination of both the idea - having something inspiring in a secret, personal place - and the attentive, skilled craft, that make these little things so magnetic.

All of my pieces are made somewhere along the Atlantic Ocean. I source the hardware, connect all the pieces, and do all the administrative tasks solo. Everything is painted from scratch, by my own hands, and no two pieces are exactly the same; they could not possibly be!

Thank you so much for all the business and stories that you've sent my way; people have opened themselves up for the sake of personal pieces, and I find it continually amazing.

Love,
Khara
