I enjoyed pulling thread from beautiful vintage kimono or obi fabric that had recently arrived from Japan. Each piece was 14" wide...the width of a sleeve. One of the pieces I remember working on was a textured silk peach with sunset yellow hues. It had multi colored flowers outlined in gold which was hand applied. It smelled of cedar as does most of the fabric I receive. These are 30-70 year old pieces of kimonos or obis which have been carefully taken apart and perfectly preserved. I still enjoy the process of pulling the basting threads as it gives me a chance to fully appreciate the texture, design and smell of cedar while perhaps imagining the person who once wore the kimono or obi.
I enjoy creating something new from existing textiles. My denim jackets are all "recycled" and in excellent condition. The vintage kimono and obi fabric has been "re-purposed" giving each Kimono West Jacket new life, style and uniqueness....no…
