Kjersten Anna Hayes' Profile

About

I design and create all of my collages and handmade books with the idea that the art we surround ourselves with can manifest our sweetest dreams, boldest adventures, and warmest hearts. I also believe that handmade books should be as unique as the thoughts and personal life experiences of those who use them, so I work hard to make sure both the insides and the outsides of my books are unique.

Using a pour method of sheet formation, I make and dye much of the paper that I use in my cover designs and collage work. Although I use a wide variety of fibers for my pulp, I make the bulk of my papers using unbleached abaca or recycled card stock that I blend in an industrial blender and dye using aqueous dispersed pigments and retention agent.

In addition to my handmade papers, I also use a wide variety of other papers in both my collages and my handmade books. Including: colored card stocks, watercolor papers, colored text stock papers, recycled pages from books or magazines, found objects, and painted papers (that I paint myself).

I hand-sew all of the bindings in my books myself. I do occasional use a spiral binding machine for spiral bound books, but even those are primarily assembled by hand. No assistants are employed in the creation of my work except for occasional help from a family member (folding pages or poking holes in preparation for sewing).

Thanks for taking an interest in my work!
