Knitting for Knockers, established in 2006, is a collaborative of artisans and craftspersons working to promote their creations to benefit breast cancer research and education. We are an effort which strives to bring together the timeless art of knitting with modern-day activism ideals, thus shedding light on the concept of craftspeople as activist artists.
I became interested in knitting while shopping at my local craft supply store. An artist drawn to the appeal of bright colors and unique textures, I was taken aback by the array of colors and yarn varieties. Despite my yearning to learn to create with those fibers, I decided not to tackle learning any new crafts, and instead continued to work within mediums already known to me: stained glass mosaic art, fabric dying, paper sculpture, and jewelry.
