Laura Mears' Profile

About

I live on five beautiful acres nestled in the rolling hills of Eastern Washington. Lots of squirrels, rabbits and deer right outside my studio windows. It is common to see red-tail hawks, raven and a lovely array of wild birds soaring overhead. They give me wings. Maybe this is why I have the urge to put wings on everything I design.
I draw a lot of my inspiration from nature. My sisters and I were children of the forests, meadows and mountain. We spent many imaginative hours playing in the woods... leaving notes for the "fairies" on old, moss covered tree-stump castles. We believed in magic. That childhood imagination is alive within me still.

One of my favorite things to do is daydreaming new designs and bringing them into being. Then it's time to shift my focus to the process of making it possible to share my new ideas. I have no formal training in ceramics. My methods are time intensive and uniquely my own. After creating a design, I make a mould from the master, cast in porcelain, sculpt in more detail and undercuts, hand paint with translucent underglazes and fire to cone 6 in my kiln. I find that each bead design has its own unique production needs. Because there is so much hands on time with each piece, the results vary, the energy and personality morphing from piece to piece.
I love chasing the "breath" of a design. It is my fondest desire to inspire creativity in others through my work... so that my "little sculptures" might find their way into someone else's daydream.
