About

As a child, my parents became involved in Rendezvous, which are pre-1840 re-enactments. Since I wanted to participate, I decided to make my own buckskin dress. So, that was my first official creation with leather. My interest in working with the supple, long lasting material grew as we became involved with traditional Pow wows, and I felt the creative spark within me inspired by the beauty and longevity of the functional art of the native people. Although I was raised in western Pennsylvania, I spent many years living and traveling in the American west, gathering ideas and materials, and developing my own style. In my mid-twenties, I moved to the island of Maui, where the local styles and the ocean added to my personal and creative growth.

I returned to Pa. in 2000, and with some help, designed and built a rustic home in the forest that I spent my childhood roaming. I'm raising two wonderful children, Sunomen and Athena, who are carrying on the tradition of creativity in their own ways.
My main materials, deerskin and elk skin are from a long time associate who maintains a tannery in Kentucky. The furs I utilize are trapped locally and taken to a small trading post to be sent off for tanning. Both the leather and furs are premium hides, tanned exceptionally well.
I welcome custom orders, and besides purses, computer bags and such, I've created leather dresses, vests, halters, jackets, chaps and more. Please contact me if you have a special project in mind that I could make a reality for you. Thank you for your interest in my work! Laurel
