About

Hello and welcome! My name is Lauren and I am a painter who lives in West Virginia with my two cats and artist husband. My work focuses on paintings that capture the feeling of my state's terrain through abstraction. A combination of oil and acrylic paint is used to create works that are energetic, bold, and lusciously textured. I have been painting intensively for almost ten years and have my work placed in both public and private collections throughout the world.

BIOGRAPHY

Lauren Adams is a painter who creates abstract works inspired by the landscape of her home in West Virginia. Her work is minimal yet expressive in style, imbued with an underlying energy. It features delicate veils of poured acrylic paint coupled with touches of textured, impasto oil paint.

Lauren has shown her work extensively at various venues including her solo exhibition at The Slingluff Gallery in Philadelphia, PA, the Annex Gallery in Charleston, WV, and a two-person show at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley. Her work has been featured on both HGTV and West Elm's websites along with the Summer 2012 West Elm print catalog. Lauren is represented by Anne Neilson Fine Art, Jeffrey Meier Gallery, and is also a juried artist of Tamarack's David L. Dickirson Gallery.

Adams is a graduate of Fairmont State University and West Virginia University, where she holds a BA in Studio Art and a BFA in Visual Art, respectively. While at FSU, Lauren studied with acclaimed painter Lynn Boggess and alongside her future husband, Derek Overfield. Her work is included in the collections of Fairmont State University and the West Virginia State Museum, as well as numerous national and international private collections.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The landscape of my home in West Virginia is where my work begins. From the pervasive environment, the work then grows inward and abstracted. A specific place or experience is often the original inspiration, but the work evolves to address larger, yet basic elements.

Much of my work explores various phenomena of water's presence in the landscape - the differing bodies it composes, the natural processes it aides, as well as the manner in which it shapes the land.

There is a clear link between this subject and my process. Working with pours of pigmented water on a substrate of primed canvas, this technique leaves evidence of the water behind - mirroring and paying homage to the environmental phenomena. Objective reproduction is exchanged for pursuit of primal simplicity and organic rhythm.
