So, why do I sew?
I am a sewing addict. I wish I could spend all day at my machine. Although my mother taught me to use her sewing machine many, many years ago, most of my sewing learning has come from recently reading blogs, books, and patterns. I am not clear on why sewing has become something I enjoy so much as it is veers rather far off the path I was on back in the BC era (Before Children). Before I became a stay-at-home mom I taught middle and high school English and history for many years and then spent about the same amount of time as a curriculum writer and a teacher trainer. My undergraduate degree is in anthropology and in my most recent job I researched and wrote about US foreign policy all…

What’s so special about the fabrics I use?
Most of my fabric comes from a family-owned textile mill in my town. The mill has a small retail store where they sell some of their handprinted fabrics to the local public. Most of the fabric is not sold in other stores or online (they sell directly to interior designers), so unless you live within driving distance, you’re out of luck. This means that my designs won’t show up on your friends or your friends’ kids (unless you give them as presents!) and everyone will think you have great taste.

When I select fabric, I generally look for geometric patterns or patterns that have a very modern feel. I prefer, and hopefully you do too, patterns that are youthful but not childish.

Why do I make what I make?
I think that the things children play with should be beautiful. A good toy should open rather than close opportunities for creativity. In our house we limit plastic toys and toys that are basically a commercial for themselves or a TV show, and we don’t have any toys that beep or talk to you (that’s right, no Elmo or See-n-Say exists to drive us batty). When I am thinking about a new product I always keep this concept in mind. Everything I make should be versatile and should not direct a child's play but should rather be a tool he or she uses to develop imagination and have fun. When I make things for adults I am of course less concerned about play. For grown-ups I'm focused on functionality and style. I work on each piece one at a time.

What else?
“Lila” is my daughter’s favorite color. Lila means purple in German, and she speaks German as well as English. It was one of her first words.

My home studio is powered with 100% renewable energy and my packaging is made of 100% recycled and/or biodegradable materials. My home is pet and smoke free.
