About

Hi! Welcome to my shop, FiveWorlds. Bet you are wondering, “What does FiveWorlds mean?” I’ll tell you about that in a minute, but first I want to introduce myself. I live in beautiful Irvine Park in St. Paul, along with my German Shepard mix Sammy, and my pretty-boy cat, Tommy. We live in a historic Victorian home that’s been converted into 3 condos. I have enough space there for a sewing room, and that’s where I do what I do! My love of hand embroidery started when I was very young; my mom was a skilled sewer, and she taught me well. Even when I was young, I loved to embroider, and one Christmas Eve I stayed upstairs by myself, finishing a pair of pillow cases for her. My family wondered why I’d be upstairs all by myself on Christmas Eve! When my mom passed, I found those pillowcases in her bureau drawer, neatly pressed and folded—after 30-some years! The butterflies on those cases were carefully satin-stitched—see them…

About

The butterflies on those cases were carefully satin-stitched—see them here.... I’ve continued to sew throughout my life—my own clothes, daughters’ clothes, granddaughter’s clothes, quilts (I love to hand quilt!), and of course, always hand embroidery. During my hippie phase, I made quilts and bags and sold them at art fairs. For my granddaughter Brandy, I created many Fancy Shawl regalia outfits for pow wow dancing. Meanwhile, I joined the quilt group at my church and made hand-sewn quilts and items to sell for charity. Several years ago, I began creating Native American themed items for sale at pow wows. A friend took my items on consignment to sell at her booth—wall hangings, quilts, purses, scarves. Recently, out of misfortune came another creative endeavor. I broke my ankle (walking Sammy), and was home-bound for three months. During those months, my beautiful dog-loving neighbors took turns walking Sammy. To express my gratitude, I made each person a hand-sewn gift of dog or cat-themed pot holder/embroidered dish towel sets. I loved making all 20 of those sets, and loved giving them to my friends even more. Woven through my sewing life has been my love of nature, and my yoga practice. I have had many starts and stops, but have made a serious commitment to it now (thanks, RiverGarden Yoga on W. 7th Street......!). Well, I promised you that I’d explain my shop name, FiveWorlds. It’s kind of a round-about story…..one of the first pow wows I attended included a concert in the evening. A. Paul Ortega (Mescalaro Apache) sang that night. I was totally entranced by his style and message. He sang about living in two worlds—Native and non-Native. Among his albums, one is titled “Two Worlds”; one is titled “Three Worlds”. I’ll leave it to you to check them out and form your own interpretations (canyonrecords.com). So, when I was contemplating what to call my shop--my collection of hand made goods--I took a look at my passions, and I thought of his songs. I thought, I have five worlds (passions) represented here—yoga practice; Native American themes; love for cats and dogs; nature; love of hand embroidery and hand quilting. I hope as you enter my shop, you’ll find that the handmade items from my five worlds speak to you in a loving way. I can do special orders if you see something you like, but want a different color or want to have an item personalized with a name done in hand embroidery.

Thanks for spending your precious minutes with me! Linda
