My love for mixed media craft was born at my grandfather's side in his workshop watching as he built our furnishings and invented gadgets through trial and error; at my grandmother's knee learning to crochet and sew while listening to her stories of childhood and adolescent adventure; and at my mother's table using fiber, metal, clay, paints and even dryer lint to create my early works. Emerging from this eclectic homespun "art education", "mixed media" became my predictable muse.

Much like life itself, I have a formula for my creations but no predictable outcome. It all begins with a "found item", single word or phrase. The item, word or phrase give birth to an idea for design that evokes intrigue, humor or romance. The unexpected happens and chaotic impressions evoked by the object or word begin to blend. I pull out my bins and boxes of "supplies" and treasures and launch my search for artifacts that appear to be related to the impressions. Imagery emerges. A vintage woman's glove becomes a purse. An antique charm turns into a fairy tale. A spoon morphs into a mirror. Papers, lace and wire grow into a collaged story. Working in my sunlit Helena, Montana studio overlooking gardens, roof tops, pine trees, and the Scratch Gravel Hills, the landscape plays midwife to my creations of 'handbags' dolls, jewelry, and collage.

The materials I utilize are unlimited. Metals, fibers, wood, jewels, sequins, wire, vintage finds of buttons, photos, lace and other artifacts weave their way into the evolution of design. Diverse elements merge with diverse beliefs and become a fanciful reality. I welcome you to LizE Designs, and invite you into imagination ...
