Christina Kakavas' Profile

About

You Greek? Well I am—and I’m proud of it.

My name is Christina Kakavas and I created Loukoumaki to satisfy the sweet tooth of cool Greek babies and kids of all ages, everywhere, who are looking to wear original T-shirt designs and proudly display their Greek heritage. Loukoumaki’s Greek T-shirts also make unique gifts.

Loukoumaki’s purpose in the universe is to say no to the status quo! Loukoumaki wants you to embrace your inner child and let it all out. Be silly. Make up your own words to songs. Cook up some bad puns and proudly serve them. Dance in your living room. Laugh out loud at your own jokes. These things are Loukoumaki.

There is an inexplicable genetic obligation for people of Greek descent to proclaim to the world that they are Greek. After the birth of my nephew, I looked for some cute Greek baby gifts to fulfill this need and fit my style. It was quickly evident that there were no such things! When it was my turn to populate the Earth with more Greek babies, the quest for these things resumed. Perhaps it was the drive of every Greek person to carry on the tradition of self-employment, but those initial fruitless searches were just some of the many inspirations to start Loukoumaki. With some gentle pushing and prodding by friends and family, along with a giant leap of faith, I decided to put my art degree and years of creating for other people to good use. As if it wasn’t enough to be born Greek and have such a rich culture to draw from, I am surrounded by the cutest, craziest, funniest, silliest muses to inspire me on a daily basis—my own children and beloved nieces and nephew.

Loukoumaki does its part to be sensitive to the environment by obsessively recycling and reusing. Loukoumaki gives its business to local mom-and-pop shops and utilizes 100% recycled paper for its bags and business cards.

Loukoumaki is a woman-owned small business based in Chicago. Our original Greek T-shirts can be found at the National Hellenic Museum in the heart of Chicago’s Greektown, at Roost in the Andersonville neighborhood, and at various local Greek festivals.
