About

Welcome! My name is Kate, and I created love&reason to share the patterns of everyday life.

I grew up in Athens, GA, studied art history in South Hadley and Boston, MA, and am now a new citizen of Brooklyn, NY. From peach orchards to apple cider doughnuts, the Boston skyline to Brooklyn brownstones, I see relationships between lines and shapes almost everywhere I go. My intention is to draw attention to those relationships, to pare them down and highlight the beauty of common items.

Every item in my shop is something that I saw, planned, drew, carved, and printed myself. I use high-quality paper and super-vibrant pigment inks... and the best espresso I can find! You will find more of my own artwork on my blog, www.love-and-reason.com, where I write about printmaking, art (and its history), graphic design, and other interesting things that I see. I am also a museum educator, and I love dachshunds, summertime, and gluten-free food in addition to art, graphic design, crafts, and books. You can also follow me on twitter at @loveandreason, or check out my pinterest boards at /loveandreason.

And the name? It was inspired by a line in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. When the spell-bound fairy queen is made to fall in love with the first “vile thing” that she sees upon awakening from her nap, she becomes enamored of a clumsy amateur actor whose head has been magically turned into that of a donkey. Though he is puzzled at first, he quickly accepts her devotion despite its complete lack of logic, saying: “…and yet, to say the truth, reason and love keep little company together now-a-days.” Though it’s a funny scene – what an ego! – the importance of a balance of rationality and passion is a central theme of the play, and the concept stuck a chord with me. It’s particularly appropriate for printmaking, as I have so much control over the imagery, which I try to keep very clean, and yet have to relinquish control over the final product, as small variations make each print a unique image.
