Eric W. Stephenson's Profile
The Iron Skulls featured here are the result of my travels to Iron Pours around the country as well as pours that I host at my studio in Chicago.
The metal used is recycled cast iron (radiators, bathtubs, pipe, fittings, etc.) We have to break it up with sledge hammers into small Dorito size chunks. Then using a furnace called a cupola and coke (refined coal) we are able to heat the cast iron to 2,600 degrees and pour the metal into sand and ceramic molds.
The process is a lot of work and a lot of fun.
Due to the recycled nature of the metal there can be random artifacts in the metal (small holes or gap from gas and flux) making each object cast unique.
