Malanda Schmitz's Profile

About

I love painting and most of all. COLOR! I paint with acrylic, oil and even watercolor - it's not the medium of paint but the color that fascinates me. I enjoy trying new techniques in creating art. Art is in everything around us and you'll often find me in our garden or remodeling something in our home.
My signature style of painting is to utilize color to bring into focus the life energy that radiates from a subject. I hope you can connect with one of my paintings. I am offering original art, commissioned paintings and limited edition prints of a handful of paintings and photography.

Malanda Schmitz: Artist and Pet Portraitist

Malanda loves dogs, cats, goats, horses and birds and Safety Harbor, too - but let's focus on her love of dogs for now.

She lives with a standard poodle, Bleau, and a german short haired pointer, Kai and her husband, Karl. (They still miss their Sweet Moqui, a black labrador who passed away April 2013).

Then there are Malanda's dog portraits. Painted with vibrant color, they capture the essence of the dog being painted. Pet lovers throughout the United States have commissioned her to paint pet portraits and her business growing. In her studio you will often find a dozen works in progress as she dances from one painting to the next.

“Weeh! I’m wagging my tail." she says. "I'm commissioned to paint dogs that makes me as happy as they are!"

She is speaking from her home/studio in Safety Harbor and she’s adding a studio in St. Petersburg, FL to be in a creative space with fellow artisans.

She has been drawing since she was old enough to hold a pencil and the beginning of Malanda’s career takes you to her days in junior high school when she would get requests for drawing graphite portraits. Self taught, she added color when she began painting at age 15 with a set of acrylic paints. Her first painting won first place in the Mississippi Museum of Art Scholastic Art Awards. It was the first of many and state and national awards as well as scholarships for college.

With a degree in hand Malanda’s first job was as an illustrator at a newspaper.

She remembers, “I couldn’t believe that I had a job where I went to work everyday to draw.” Ironically enough, this is where Malanda’s path took a step away from creating art. Her leadership skills were rewarded with a promotion into management, which led to a twenty-year career as a Creative Director.

A job as Presentation Team Leader, charged with leading the news graphics team into the realm of visual reporting on multiple platforms brought her to Tampa, Florida in 1999. Working with creative colleagues in the fast paced, visual story telling environment kept her attention for years but she longed to have her hands in the paint.

As if it were a scene from a love story; she met Karl they were married in 2006. A newly wed, she wasn’t expecting the life-changing medical event that would leave here recuperating at home. Years of desire to have her hands back in the paint, her friend the paintbrush and her fur-babies came to her rescue. She always enjoyed drawing and painting animals but the love and comfort her pups gave her inspired her to paint them in vivid color. That was the beginning of a fantastic adventure, Malanda Art Of Life, celebrating life through art in capturing treasured moments on canvas.

In 2007, Malanda resigned from her position to pursue her passion of painting and creating art. 2007 - 2011 were spent continuing to improve her health and donating her paintings and time for the benefit of non-profit organizations. By donating large scale original paintings decorating alligator sculptures Malanda’s art helped to raise over $8,000 for an area effected by Katrina, (Gautier Pride), the support mine-detection dogs (The Marshall Legacy Inst.) and for the benefit of children (The Children’s Home Inc.)

With her health in good standing Malanda is exhilarated the start of each day. It brings her great joy to pay tribute to beloved family members and collaborate with clients to create art that touches their heart or makes them laugh out loud. Malanda will often utilize her years of expertise as a visual story-teller in her original art, visually telling story or painting hidden meanings and more that meets the eye at first glance.

“The flows from my brush to the canvas,” she says, "and I know this is what I was meant to do."
