About

“Marty Klein is a pioneer in scanography, the art of using a flatbed scanner as a macro camera. His work is remarkable for its deeply informed connection to nature, for its wit, and for its joy in life. Klein's grounding in photography serves him well in composing his materials on the glass. What gives Klein depth is his intimacy with Nature, for he is a true naturalist, a man of the land. He sees.” www.morningearth.org 2010

In my work, I strive to portray essences, the glories of natural forms and colors, the familiar and the less-seen details. Fueled by my deep connection to 'green world,' and an insatiable and wide-ranging curiosity, nature’s marvels and mysteries inspire me daily. The natural world is my sanctuary...a place for refuge and discovery. Foraging for wild foods, land protection, environmental education and gardening are among my interests. The lure of the unexpected and the surprises that invariably appear in nature, entice me...invite me to linger a moment longer and look a little closer. Sharing my knowledge and experience with others is both a passion and a joy. The medium I have chosen to pursue suits me well.

I am a life-long nature photographer, drawn to the seen and the less-seen. In 2006, I began using a flat bed scanner as my camera and natural objects as my subjects. Following the scan, I spend many hours, sometimes 20 or more, refining an image in my "digital darkroom." The resulting prints reveal details in a new and exciting way.

Fueled by my deep connection to “green world,” and an insatiable and wide-ranging curiosity, nature’s marvels and mysteries inspire me daily. The natural world is my sanctuary...a place for refuge and discovery. A forager by character and practice, the lure of the unexpected and the surprises that invariably appear entice me, invite me to linger a moment longer and look a little closer.

All of my images are signed and printed on fine art rag paper, using archival inks. Most are available in 2 or 3 sizes, as limited editions, matted or not.
