Matthew Welch's Profile

About

I try to use only wood that has been discarded either by man or by nature. Sometimes my material is leftover from other artists' projects and sometimes left by the side of the road. Most often I find unwanted trees advertised online and occasionally I'll wander into the woods after a particularly violent storm has brought some down. In all cases I try to honor what was once a living creature by bringing out its most unique characteristics in the most graceful way that I can.

I have never sold a "perfect" bowl because I prefer to leave all imperfections. Bark inclusions, termite damage, beetle tunnels, or fungal spalting only add to the recorded history of the tree's life.

I am very interested in other woodturners' creations; please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. Thanks for looking!
