Megan Owdom-Weitz's Profile

About

Specializing in handmade goodness, Megan Lee Designs has been rocking the craft scene for roughly five years. Since quitting her full-time, fully unenthralling corporate day job, Megan Owdom-Weitz, has focused solely on bringing continuously evolving products to the d.i.y. craft world. Some words that could be used to describe her sockdogs, screenprinted fashion, stationary, and hip hip packs: Cute, humorous, whimsical, beautiful, well-made, and unique. You might see her in Ukrainian Village with her husband (aka craft show helper) walking her wacky dachshund Heika looking for inspiration around every corner.

I just re-read this post from facebook with 25 random things about myself, and I feel like it describes me pretty well.

25 random things about Megan Lee

1. My nickname when I was little was "the renos" because my dad used to call me Megarenos. I loved it and haven't thought about it in awhile...probably because no one really calls me that anymore.

2. I loved playing sports on teams in gradeschool and played basically everything I could. In 8th grade I played volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, and, yes, I was a cheerleader. Gooooo Meg!!! :)

3. I was in a very short-lived band in college called "The Blue Rose" and got to perform twice (I think just twice) on stage and it was so fun. I have also recorded two other songs while in Chicago - one with my other even more short-lived band Morning Sickness on which I played the keyboard and sang, and the other with Microfilm which I sang back-up vocals on their cover of Chicago. Oh, and I secretly, or not so secretly, have always wanted to sing in a band.

4. My family is nerdily obsessed with musicals and we know all the lyrics from like every musical from the 1950s to present day. And, we still play the records when we're all home..even though it seems to happen less now that there are boyfriends and husbands that are not actual Owdoms...

5. I really really really like ellipses...but not quite as much as I like small bowls.

6. In sixth grade, I went to Camp Fire camp (yes, I was a Camp Fire girl and proud of it) and got to live in a treehouse for a week. It was pretty much a week that changed my life. At the beginning of the week my friend came to pick me up and I realized like 5 minutes before I left for camp that I got my period for the first time. Then I went to live in a tree. If that was not enough, I got pushed off the ladder of the treehouse later in the week and had to go to the hospital for stitches and still have a scar on my chin. I will always remember sitting there bleeding all over the shirt that I had just tie-dyed and my friends talking about how I should have a hot male nurse shave my legs at the hospital. Oh, the memories.

7. Back to present day for a bit..I get really excited every single time I sell one of my Megan Lee Designs items, whether its a card or a dress. I hope that never goes away.

8. Someday I want to have a shower with two shower-heads and a car with heated seats. (That's a shared goal with me and Erik).

9. I watch way too much tv, but I always feel like if I'm doing something else while I'm watching it its not that bad. And, I find it oddly comforting especially if I am home by myself for a long time.

10. I love my siblings and I could never imagine life as an only child. It would have been completely different and I honestly can't even fathom it.

11. I've almost always been proud of being book smart, except maybe for a little while in high school when I was trying REALLY hard to be cool and fit in with the bad crowd. I always feel like I've walked the fence between the goody two shoes crowd and the that smokes in the bathroom. Just call me Claire from My-so called life.. :) My favorite show in high-school. Love!

12. I got engaged in front of the pygmy hippos at the Lincoln Park Zoo. It was definitely one of the best moments of my life, and was also totally unexpected. My husband also took me back to the zoo I think a year later and surprised me again with getting to meet the hippos "behind the scenes" where we got to take pictures, and touch the hippo and also got to see how it likes to spray its shit everywhere. But really, it was super awesome and so cute!!!

13. Growing up I liked animals but never thought I was necessarily a "pet person". Maybe just compared to some of my friends who were obsessed with pets. But, of course, a pet person was born now that I have my dachshund Heika, and I can't ever imagine life without a little furry companion. Having a pet is amazing!!

14. I love to travel and one of the places I loved the most was Santa Fe, New Mexico. Now that I think about it, I also really liked Sedona, Arizona, and the short time I spent in Texas. Maybe I am destined to move to the southwest...

15. I was in the play "Murder in a Nunnery" with Katie G. (passo) in high school and I was the person that got murdered at the beginning and I had to come to the play each night for like 10 minutes to just go onscreen and scream. It was kind of ridiculous. But, Katie was awesome as the Mother Superior - when are you going to act again?? :)

16. One of the scariest things I ever did was to go to college without knowing anyone. ANYONE. It was pretty crazy for me, since I feel like I had almost never been in that situation before, except maybe back in pre-school. It was really one of the best experiences ever though, because no one had any expectations about me and I could become completely my own person without anyone already assuming what I would act like or do.

17. I love to bake things for other people and am always looking for an excuse to do so. I guess I like baking for myself too...and don't want to eat it all..but I also love to make people happy, and baked goods seem to be a pretty good path to happiness.

18. I've always loved art and was never sure if I was "good enough" at it, and am so happy that I am trying to follow my love for art and creating beautiful things without worrying so much about whether or not it is "good" art.

19. I like doing the dishes and hate cleaning the bathroom. I like organizing and hate putting away my clothes.

20. I absolutely love silly teen romantic comedies, any movies involving dance themes, and young adult novels. I'm sure it has something to do with the severe LACK of romance in my own teenage years, but for some reason I still totally love all of the coming-of-age stories.

21. I love re-decorating especially using things I already have in new ways. I think living in a space surrounded by objects that I love and inspire me is what makes my house a home.

22. I love sarcasm and super wacky people. These don't necessarily go together, but whatever. I'm on #22 and I'm running low on random.

23. I have like 8 pairs of knee-high boots, and I didn't even buy any last year. I LOVE boots and have ever since my first year of college, when I got my first pair of kick-ass black knee-high platform KISS-style boots when visiting my sister in NYC. I basically didn't take them off for the next 3 months.

24. I love making mexican feasts for my family and friends and if you have never attended one, you might need to get to know me better. I make a mean guacamole, a mean margarita, and what else really matters? :)

25. One of my favorite books as a child was "Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry". I think it helped shape my views on race, gender and equality and also feel really lucky to be born the person that I am.
