About

Lisa Maki is wife, mother of two wonderful boys and a public health nurse for Fraser Health authority. She grew up on a farm north of Edmonton surrounded by animals, specifically cat’s dogs and horses. During high school and university she worked part time as a veterinary assistant at Abbotsford Veterinary Hospital for a total of 6 years. Lisa also worked at the Greater Vancouver Zoo for 1 year as a zoo keeper in charge of large carnivores including: bears, tigers, lions, cougars, wolves, foxes and coyotes. After completing 4 years of sciences in university she took time off to have her children. Once her children were old enough she returned to university for an additional 4 years where she obtained her baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
Lisa has been involved in the dog world since childhood. Training and competing in obedience with her pet dogs since she was a teenager. She has studied the art of dog training for years and runs a dog training business called “See Spot Come K9 Counselling Services” out of her home. She focuses the majority of her teaching on puppy prenatal, but also does one on one behavioural consultations, and helps people to become better dog owners through teaching the importance of leadership and resource management. Lisa is a member of both the Canadian Kennel Club and the Canadian Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
Lisa became interested and fell in love with pure bred Standard Wirehaired Dachshunds in the fall of 2008 and was fortunate to purchase her first show quality bitch from the wonderful and reputable breeder Debra Wold of the outstanding Matsutake Kennels. Lisa finished her bitch quickly in Canada and now is pursuing an American conformation title. Lisa does all her own training, grooming and handling of her dachshunds, and has studied handling under very reputable instructors such as Joy Henderson. Lisa started her kennel in the spring of 2010, with a goal of breeding top quality Standard Wirehaired Dachshunds that will excel on all levels, in and out of the show ring. She works closely with other seasoned breeder and mentors. Lisa is a member of the Western Dachshund Club of Canada.
Lisa‘s passions include spending quality time with her family and dogs, camping and fishing and reading a good book. She has also studied ballet for 16 years. Her favourite hobby is working with her dogs and competing in conformation shows, obedience trials and earth dog. Another one of her passions is writing. Lisa is an avid writer and is a regular columnist for Canine Review Magazine, which is a top conformation dog magazine distributed throughout Canada. Lisa’s work will also be featured on the Dogs in Canada website as a web exclusive. In addition, Lisa is also a volunteer for Abbotsford Community Services where she tutors ESL students, is a co-organizer for the annual Fraser Valley Wish Trail Ride that raises money for the Children’s Wish Foundation and also volunteers for St John’s ambulance doing therapy work with her dogs.
