About

Welcome to Midnight Zodiac,

I create a range of fantasy leather accessories based on the wide spectrum of myth and folklore that inspires me. From gothic horror to fairy tale innocence and whimsy. I enjoy morbid decor based on skeletons and bones as much as quaint primitive, shabby chic, patchwork quilts. All the hand crafts of the 70's made a huge impression on me through library books as a kid so I am likely to throw together quilting, patchwork, crochet granny squares and swirl it with some demonic heavy metal influence from my high school days and a touch of fetish fascination from the 90's spent in NY observing great leather designs in creative environments.

mini artist's statement below,

The creation of strange things is instinctive to me...it has arisen, I believe, from early exposure to and subsequent adoration of...all things grotesque, morbid, bizarre, baroque, florid, elaborately wrought, bestially gothic, and devilishly feral.

All that I do is influenced by the natural world and the uncanny abilities of its creatures. Many of my items suggest a protective, invocative or apotropaic purpose...I have the deepest fascination for the plants and creatures with deadly poisons, venoms, and ornamental armored skins. They have an inviolable imperiousness and an indomitable spirit which I adore.

“There are unknown forces in nature; when we give ourselves wholly to her, without reserve, she lends them to us; she shows us these forms, which our watching eyes do not see, which our intelligence does not understand or suspect.”
~Auguste Rodin

Welcome to Midnight Zodiac Leather Works,

Items presented here are made in fine quality tooling and or garment leather and finished with the best quality paints and patinas.

Where adhesives are used as with feathers, I use a powerful millinery product that makes cleaning safer...feathers can be lightly and briefly steamed over a tea pot to freshen them if they get smooshed or otherwise clumped together. I do not recommend immersion of feathers or any of my items, and steaming any of the paints directly would be a very bad idea. Just the tips of the feathers....and fast...and the glue will be ok. I hand dye the feathers myself with several companies products...I have been told by professionals there is no such thing as colorfast dye on feathers. Meaning it will run if it gets soaked. So use caution if it will be raining.

I strive for uniqueness and take pride in offering well made odd things that are a mix of strange and beautiful...eerie and fun.

I ship priority mail, usually the day after receiving the order. Message me if you desire insurance and tracking number.

All photos taken in natural light, as accurate color representation is extremely important to me.

***I have another etsy page, quite simply I wanted a more easy to remember name so started this one.

The other page which has some leather items is here,

http://www.etsy.com/shop/idolatrium

and here is the additional info from that page to further explore images of my work...

The images contained herein are also viewable in a separate gallery against a black background...which helps immensely with many of my dark pieces with deep reflective colors and difficult to capture holographic fabrics.

Take a look and see them in their true midnight opalescence...
