The juxtaposition of materials is a central theme for both artists in their mediums, Shelley's love of metals provided April with the impetus to experiement with silver and gold leaf on clay, trying to capture the reflective, intangible qualities of metal in the sculptures.

About

Welcome to our workshop!

The journey of mkwATELIER began with a passion for design and effect. Artists April Wind and Shelley Koscielniak are the creative forces behind the designs. Each artist brings her passions for minimalism, abstract expressionism, architecture and love of mid-century modern design into play with these sculptural pieces. The juxtaposition of materials is a central theme for both artists in their mediums, Shelley's love of metals provided April with the impetus to experiement with silver and gold leaf on clay, trying to capture the reflective, intangible qualities of metal in the sculptures.

Each stone is hand selected for its unique aesthetic design and metaphysical properties; both artists practice feng shui and the properities of the stones play a vital role in the selection of precious stones, semi-precious stones, geodes and minerals used in the sculptures. Every stone sculpture is unique, one of a kind due to the nature of the individual hand-selected stones. The artists use repurposed wood for the bases which often transcend being the pedestal of the piece, becoming an intrinsic detail of the design. Each sculpture emphasizes textures, the raw rough edged stones contrasted with smooth clay forms. The sculptures are influenced by the curving minimal lines of Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi.

Both artists attended art schools in Chicago, each studying contrasting mediums. Their career paths from fine arts gallery curator to pastry artist have played a large part in the evolution of their work. Each piece is hand sculpted in their Los Angeles studio.
