Monika Chovanec's Profile

About

Monika is an artist, illustrator and a designer who has been engaged in one creative endeavor or another from her very early childhood. One of her early memories involve painting for hours while visiting her grandmother and grandfather.
She drew her inspiration from her frequent times spent in nature, running free with friends in the meadows and forests of central Europe. She grew up in the Czech Republic, which is a small European country, rich in history, flora and fauna. She recalls till this day, that every hill she painted as a child, had a castle sitting on top of it! Why wouldn't it? That was truly how beautiful the countryside appeared. Castles, chateaus and other beautiful architecture adorned the landscape.
Nowadays, living on the other side of the globe, she enjoys the pastoral beauty of Sonoma County, California, where she lives with her three children and family…

Nowadays, living on the other side of the globe, she enjoys the pastoral beauty of Sonoma County, California, where she lives with her three children and family.
She works primarily with acrylic paints, watercolors and other mixed media. She also loves to "draw with fire" by utilizing the rather unusual medium called pyrography, which is a method of burning designs into wood and other types of materials.
She is still a nature lover who looks for any opportunity to spend time outdoors with her kids. She gets her artistic inspirations from time spent in nature, observing and learning about all that awaits to be discovered by anyone willing to venture out of the comforts of their home. She is a firm believer in the healing power of nature and the importance of staying connected to the outdoors.
Her passion is enabling children to experience all the beauty that the great outdoors has to offer. She enjoys bringing kids on hikes, walks, excursions, and fishing trips as often as schedule allows. She draws ideas for her art from the endless supply of intricate, beautiful and complex designs found in nature, and hopes to portray the pleasing lines and shapes that are all around us, if only we pause long enough to see. "Creating art is a form of meditation for me. It's a very relaxing and centering. The whole process of capturing things that I see in nature and all around me consists of observing, absorbing, and learning about that particular plant of animal. I love to involve my kids in the learning aspect as well. Given the fact we have done a lot of homeschooling over the years, we love to dive into studying about a particular subject of interest and find out all we can about it. It could be a bird we happened to encounter on a hike, or an unusual flower we saw on a walk. Any chance encounter we have experienced is an opportunity to learn more about what is in our environment. What you discover will only enrich your experience the next time you explore the woods, meadows, creeks, coast..."
"I look at art and creativity as something that we should all be involved with in some way in our lives. The final product of our artistic or creative expression will be different for each of us, depending on our particular gift and talent we posses. Be it a painting, drawing, sculpture, a piece of jewelry, a skillfully crafted wooden table, a written story, a song, an amazing meal prepared with love or a homemade jam made of strawberries grown in the garden, they are all forms of creative expression.
I never view my art as something to outdo another artist with or aim to be "better" than someone else. I only aim to do better tomorrow, that I did today. I don't think you can really compete or compare when it comes to art and creativity. We are all such varied individuals with different skills, styles, ideas and ways of expressing ourselves, I think we should all support and encourage each other in our creative endeavors and enjoy the beautiful mix of final product that comes out of everyone's efforts. Art and creativity of all kinds is there to enrich our lives and the lives of people around us."
