Melisa Santacroce's Profile

About

Pixiekids Toys are all handmade out of Eco-felt, which is felt manufactured from recycled plastic bottles. We believe that imaginative play toys are all the more meaningful when they are handmade and ecologically sound. About

Pixiekids Toys are all handmade out of Eco-felt, which is felt manufactured from recycled plastic bottles. We believe that imaginative play toys are all the more meaningful when they are handmade and ecologically sound. The artist behind Pixiekids Toys, Melisa Santacroce, is a stay-at-home mom whose baby boy loves to play with the toys that she makes. Nine-year old Gabe is the "idea" guy and inspires new designs, while husband Bill makes the wooden boxes that come with some of the felt food sets.

Melisa is also a Speech Language Pathologist and she has had Montessori Teacher Training, so she is constantly looking for ways to embed positive educational experiences with her handmade items. All Pixiekids Toys are made to encourage imaginative play and language development. Items require hand-stitching to finish and extra care is taken to be sure that pieces will not easily come apart in the hands of young children.

Melisa has used pretend play as a way to encourage language development when conducting speech therapy with students, and she is inspired by that experience. Imaginative play and role-playing are excellent ways to model language use for children who may need extra help with language development, or are non-verbal. It is also a great way to encourage cooperative play between preschoolers, which is key to their social development. For example, parents can use Pixiekids Toys play food sets to help their little ones learn names of fruits and vegetables, colors, and can teach them to count as they take them out of the grocery bag. Small groups of children can use the play food sets to open a pretend grocery store or farmers market, or have a pretend restaurant with their friends!
