Ken Grunke's Profile

About

I have been working with wood most of my life, but did not discover woodturning until the late 80's and became addicted to the craft! It's somewhat similar to turning pottery on a wheel, although spinning clay is an additive and formative process where woodturning is subtractive. Fancy way of saying you can take the wood away, but you can't put it back!

I have been a member of the American Association of Woodturners, along with the local SW Wisconsin chapter Coulee Region Woodturners, whose website I have been maintaining since 2001.

I love working with local, indigenous woods of my home region in Wisconsin. My area is rich with several species of trees and I never have to cut down a live tree as all my items are made from trimmings or already existing deadwood.

Much of my work retains natural features of the tree from which it came, such as the bark, or the outer surface of a log or limb. I do take pains to eliminate undesirable elements of the wood such as bugs, spiders, and other creepy-crawlies as well as mold, disease and fungi. The polyurethane varnish I use is a great detriment to the survival of such critters, and a large part of my work is treated in a microwave oven dedicated just for that purpose.

What you see in my shop is only a small sampling of what I have to offer, I will be adding more items as time goes by. If you have a need for something you don't see, please contact me. I like new challenges!
